What is a domain name and how does it work?

What exactly is a domain name? A domain name consists of two parts, the first part is the chosen name and the second part is the domain name extension, these two together form your domain name which is linked to an IP address of for example a web server. Your domain name is unique and can be accessed anywhere in the world. That is why it is important to choose an easy domain name so that people can remember it well and thus easily visit your website. The chosen name in your domain name (before the “.”) is usually based on your personal or company name. In some cases this can also be a product name. The domain extension (after the “.”) is usually based on the location of your company for example .nl in the Netherlands or if you are active via the internet then you can also link multiple domain extensions to this such as .net .com .eu.
